Honister Pass is possibly the most rugged of the North Lake District Passes – strewn with glacial debris, remnants from old slate mines, and curious shaggy sheep (the local breed, with their curly horns, looks more like goats).
The U-shaped valleys we saw are textbook examples of those carved out by glaciers. High on the hillsides, one can see small “hanging valleys” – they were cut off by the huge flow of the much larger glacier that swept down the main valley floor.
From Honister Pass, we dropped down into the sweet and homey Borrowdale Valley, with a few lonely hamlets.
