A Rick Steves’ suggestion – Eight Bells pub is a charming 14th-century inn. According to Rick, it is the best deal going for top-end pub dining in town, with English dishes both classic and modern. The pub has a nice outside terrace to enjoy drinks under a cover while you wait for your table or just to relax after wandering high street.
Here is the main page of the Menu. Jackie had the Traditional Cod Filet. I had the Prime British Pork Steak. Notice the interesting way they ask you to share your allergies. 🙂
Jackie had the Sticky Toffee Pudding. I had the Trio of Ice Cream and Shortbread
Here is Jackie’s Traditional Cod. She said it was excellent – thus far the best traditional fish & chips she has had on our trip.
Here is my British Pork Steak. Also very good. The Chimichurri was an interesting and tasty addition. 🙂
Jackie’s Sticky Toffee Pudding. 2nd Time she has had this… I think she likes it! 🙂
Yes… just Ice Cream.
Cheers from the back terrace!

Our overall thoughts? Food was very good to excellent. Back terrace was also a delight. Service was a bit spotty… this could have been for a number of factors (1) we were early – we checked in and told them we would wait on the terrace and there was no hurry. When our reservation time had come and gone, we checked and found that our table was reserved and waiting. We simply did not know that was the case. No harm there. (2) We were served by no less than four people, and it did not appear to be coordinated. It was a bit disjointed. Again, could have been due to staffing reasons (COVID affected) or simply a bad setting. In any case, it took almost 15 minutes after clearing the plates after dessert to get our final bill.
To summarize – the food was excellent – the location and setting was wonderful. We just caught them on a bad night in terms of attention – perhaps driven by falling thru the cracks due to our early arrival. We’d certainly give it another try. 🙂
