Vernazza lacks any real hotels, and almost all the choices are affittacamere – private rooms for rent.
Most places accept only cash. They promise free Wi-Fi (often spotty) and don’t include breakfast unless noted. Some have killer views – and most come with lots of stairs. I do mean lots of stairs.
We stayed at the wonderful La Mala’!
La Mala is the town’s jet-setter pad. It is reached by climbing over 140 stairs.
We were met at the train station by Giamba to help with luggage. Poor guy. 🙂 He is very well known around town… everyone seemed to call out to him as we walked down the main drag.
La Mala is four crisp, pristine white rooms – it boasts fancy-hotel-type extras and all the rooms share a seaview terrace. Our room (#26) looked right out onto the terrace from the main level.
Here is where I set up my computer to get some work done. Not the best chair… but it got the work done.
Very comfortable and firm bed.
Room #26 has a downstairs… down this steep flight of steps is a day bed – a perfect spot to get some reading done and to create space. The window opens out over the ocean and fills the room with the sounds, smells, and fresh breeze that comes from the water.
The bathroom was modern… tight but not overly so. A very comfortable shower…
Bidet, toilet and the wonderful towel warmer.
Smallish sink.
The views from the terrace were fantastic.
Breakfast is offered at two bars in town. They are almost across the main drag from each other, and are offered since each is closed a different day of the week.
This place is super popular and rightfully so – be sure to book early as it fills up quickly.
Highly recommended.
