The Attentive Traveler – Glenridding, England – Ullswater – Lanty’s Tarn and Keldas Hill

Long, narrow Ullswater, which some consider the loveliest lake in the area, offers miles of diverse and grand Lake District Scenery. The main town on Ullswater is the stony village of Glenridding, which is little more than a few pubs and shops along the bank of a spritely stream.

While here in August, Josh and I hiked up to a hilltop with a spectacular view of Ullswater (Keldas Hill), and a small picturesque pond (Lanty’s Tarn). It was a nice hike, and something I was excited for Jackie to experience. As I’ve shared earlier, Jackie is not what we would call a “hiker” – she is a “walker”. Give her a nice trail around a lake and she is happy (we’ll do that in an upcoming update). Make her climb to the top of a hill… not the recipe for a happy Jackie.

But she was game to at least try…

The trail begins alongside the Glenridding Beck River, then follows up the river passing rows of little cottages. Near the end of the road, you turn left, go through a swing gate, and then climb thru the woods to first reach Lanty’s Tarn and then up another steep climb to the Keldas Hill overlook.

It was a fine day – windy and brisk, but at least the sun was shining.

After what proved to be a difficult climb for Jackie, we got to the Tarn to find that the trail was closed. The winter storms had blown over a significant number of trees around the Tarn, which closed down the possibility of continuing further. We had to satisfy ourselves with the views of the tarn thru the gate, and then retrace our steps and come down the hill.

I was disappointed… but I think it made Jackie a bit happier… kind of like this rock wall. 🙂
