The Attentive Traveler – Whiskey/Scotch/Bourbon Review – Bladnoch Vinaya (46.7% OB, 2024)

I am the furthest from an expert… but I am learning to appreciate the complexities of a good Whiskey/Scotch/Bourbon. Thru my Rotary connections, I have joined a Whiskey fellowship that supplied a list of the “101 Whiskies to try before you die”. So I am beginning to work my way down the list. Hoping to discover some lifelong friends… 🙂

Nose: I hesitate to write it, because what do regions even mean anymore, but the first impression is that of a fairly traditional Lowland style. There’s a certain grassiness, but also gentle floral notes. Also cured lemons, a touch of butterscotch and a tinge of apple peel. The underlying sweetness binds everything together.

Taste: Fairly fatty arrival with a touch of honeycomb, as well as mixed peels. There’s some orange marmalade here, but also a gentle (bitter) leafy note, a soft nuttiness and generous candied fruits.

Finish: Medium length. A touch of ginger, some resin and some madeira cake. Almonds too.

Score: 8.4 (of 10) A pleasant little thing! Sorry, that sounds condescending. I mean the Bladnoch Vinaya is clearly a well-composed single malt. It won’t set your world on fire, but transcends standard entry-level quality whisky.
